finalOutcome
The end result, ultimate effect, or terminal state produced by a causal pathway. This property identifies what the entire chain of causation ultimately leads to—the last domino in the sequence initiated by initialCause.
Why This Property Exists
Medical explanations often trace causation through multiple steps to reach an outcome. Schema.org can express that "A causes B" but cannot distinguish intermediate effects from ultimate outcomes in a multi-step pathway.
The finalOutcome property explicitly marks the endpoint of a CausalPathway, enabling:
- Clear prognosis: Identify what a pathway ultimately produces
- Treatment goals: Understand what interventions aim to achieve or prevent
- Educational clarity: Distinguish ultimate outcomes from intermediate results
- Knowledge graph queries: "What does this pathway lead to?" becomes answerable
Together with initialCause and pathwaySteps, this property creates a complete model of multi-step causation.
Domain and Range
Used On (Domain)
| Type | Context |
|---|---|
| hs:CausalPathway | Primary use. Every causal pathway should have a finalOutcome. |
Expected Values (Range)
| Type | Notes |
|---|---|
| schema:MedicalCondition | Common for pathological pathways—diseases, symptoms, or clinical states. |
| hs:BiologicalProcess | For physiological outcomes like "tissue regeneration" or "collagen synthesis". |
| schema:MedicalEntity | Broader medical entities as outcomes. |
Semantics
Relationship to Pathway Structure
A CausalPathway has three structural components:
- initialCause — What starts the pathway
- pathwaySteps — The ordered sequence of intermediate steps
- finalOutcome — What the pathway ultimately produces (this property)
Final vs Intermediate Outcomes
The finalOutcome is distinct from the result property on individual CausalSteps:
- Step results are intermediate—they feed into the next step
- finalOutcome is terminal—it's what the entire pathway produces
Example: In a collagen synthesis pathway, step results might include "SMAD phosphorylation" and "gene transcription", but the finalOutcome is "mature collagen fibril formation".
Temporal Considerations
The finalOutcome may include temporal information about when it manifests:
- Immediate outcomes (seconds to minutes)
- Short-term outcomes (hours to days)
- Long-term outcomes (weeks to months)
This timing information can be included in the description property of the outcome entity.
Usage Guidance
Do
- Choose the true terminal state—the clinically or biologically significant endpoint
- Include timing when relevant—"improvements visible at 3-6 months"
- Use MedicalCondition for pathological outcomes—diseases, symptoms, adverse effects
- Use BiologicalProcess for physiological outcomes—regeneration, synthesis, healing
Don't
- List intermediate results—those belong in pathwaySteps as step results
- Omit the outcome—pathways without finalOutcome are incomplete
- Be vague—"improvement" is less useful than "increased dermal collagen density"
